Assessment Evaluation and Reporting
Assessment Blog Post #1
Welcome to my Assessment and Evaluation blog. For my first post i am going to indicate what I want to know about assessment and evaluation. First off I want to know how much is based on work vs what you see in class. So what percentage of the overall grading should come from assignments or test, vs how much should come from one on one discussion or alternative forms of assessing a students knowledge? Next, I want to know if there is room for awarding marks for effort. For insistence if a student is struggling a lot with a specific concept and you see them working very hard to comprehend it but they do not reach the predetermined standard for it, could you award them marks for effort? Finally, I am interested to know how many things do you need to assess in order to get a good idea of a students knowledge per subject. So is it okay to have a few larger assessment or several small ones?
Assessment Blog Post #2
Welcome back to my Assessment and Evaluation blog. In this post I am going to discuss what I have learned about assessment so far in the course, and why it is important in the classroom. Assessment is a complex process which involves planning for what you need the students to learn by referencing the curriculum documents. It also has to do with gathering evidence of student learning to review and expand upon, while always applying your professional judgement to assess the work. Assessment can take many forms it can be diagnostic, to discover what your students already know. It can be formative to help teach your students through the process and not based on the final result. And, it could be summative, which looks at a students ability to produce what has been asked of them. There is assessment for, as, and of learning. Assessment for learning is the process of assessing something in order to figure out where the student is at in the process of learning. Assessment as learning is using a task for students to have the opportunity to use assessment for their own learning and gauge where they are. And assessment of learning is a formative assessment and is used to clarify students learning and understanding. Assessment takes place in four areas for each task that are; knowledge and understanding, thinking, communication, and application.
Effective classroom assessment involves using combinations of all the above methods. So start off with diagnostic assessment and assessment for learning to gauge where the students are at in the given area. Then use differentiating teaching strategies to give appropriate work to each student that will enable them to learn more advanced ideas within the subject area. Then use formative and as learning assessment to have the students reflect on their work and what they liked and did not like about the learning process to help identify ways in which to improve the process next time to ensure they are working at their maximum capacity and have an effective understanding of the process before moving on. Finally, finish with summative, and of learning assessment strategies to see how effective you were at teaching, and the students were at learning. Some examples of summative assessment could be an oral presentation, a research paper, a power point presentation, or a video presentation. Just make sure they have well documented success criteria that was agreed on prior to the assessment. Hope this was helpful in explaining the process of assessment. Until next time, goodbye.

EDBE 8Y01 Digital Portfolio: Reflection Prompts Directions
1. Think about how you will use the Assessment page of your Digital Portfolio during your first teaching block. Provide
2 examples, writing 1 paragraph for each.
Two ways that I will use my Digital Portfolio during my first leaching block are; I will use the resources I found pertaining to English Language Learners (ELL) to help me with a student in my placement and modifying how I teach for her. And I will reference the resources I found that dealt with performance standards and achievement charts.
I found an article on Edutopia titled Resources for Teaching English-Language Learners by Ashley Cronin that helped lay out ways in which you can help boost ELL's classroom engagement, instruct ELL students through literacy and language, use the arts to help teach ELL's, and how technology can be used to help teach ELL's. This will be especially pertinent for me in my placement as there is a young lady in my class who immigrated last year from Syria. She spent her formative years in a war zone, three years in refugee camps and has only had one year education prior to coming to the grade 5/6 class I am in. She is extremely smart, however she still struggles with some concepts during class. This article will be perfect for me to read while making my lesson plans and planning modifications for her to help with the language barrier.
I also found an article by Grant Wiggins called 13 Concrete Examples Of Better Feedback For Learning that will be useful in my placement as it gives real-life examples of when and how feedback is applicable and should be used. It talks about an example in a grade 6 class in which the teacher included the students in designing the success criteria and the process was more heavily weighted than the finished project. The teacher watched how the students interacted and how they decided what advice to take from their peers and how they acted on it. They also payed close attention to what concept the students thought was most important and weighted the heaviest when designing their own success criteria. This will be important in my placement because I will be looking for feedback from my associate teacher as well as the students in areas they felt I did good at and where I can improve, so I will need to decide what advice to take to heart and act upon.
2. Choose one professional learning goal from your AER Strategy Form that you will explore in Block 1. Develop “I can”
statements to identify how you will know you’ve reached your goal.
Professional Learning Goal: I will work on being more organized, so that I will be more effective as a teacher and never misplace any students work.
-I can ensure I complete daily records of what I did at the end of each day.
-I can ensure I correctly and promptly file all of my and the students work at the end of each day in my log book.
-I can ensure I have all my lesson plans prepared the night before and know what supplies I will need prior to arriving at school.
