Blog Post #4

This week for my Genius Hour Project all I needed to do was hang the door. I started by measuring how high I needed the door to hang and then measuring up from the highest point of the floor (I own a old house so the floor is not perfectly flat). I then measured and marked the height of the track system the door would hang on. Next I measured how high i needed the wheels and brackets to sit on the door and drilled pilot holes in the door to attach the brackets and wheels. Next I went to hang the track, however the first stud i found turned out to be spaced oddly so none of my remaining screws hit studs meaning I needed to remove them and start over again. I found another stud and re-hung the track properly by making sure the studs were properly spaced out and using a level to ensure it was straight so the door would not roll on its own. I then filled the initial holes and painting over them. After properly securing the track all that was left was to mount the door on...

This week a very productive and fortuitous week for my Genius Hour project. I watched a video to get some ideas on how to hang the door.                                  Industrial by Design. (2016). How to mount a sliding barn door .       I also was lucky enough to find a pre-made barn door to purchase to expedite the process. Not only was I able to find a ready made door with the dimensions I required but it was cheaper then purchasing wood to build one on my own would have been. I ended up purchasing a beautiful pre-made door for $100.00 off of Kijiji.      The most trouble I had this week was fitting the door into my car when I went to pick it up. Thankfully by moving the seats around and lowering a few headrests I was able to fit it in comfortably, even if it meant a uncomfortable drive home.       My next steps in compl...

This week for my Genius Hour project I measured my desired door frame, found and ordered a track for the wall that came with matching hardware for the door, and started searching for barn board for sale.       This week I measured the door way I am going to hang door in and found that it is 36 inches wide. This meant that I needed to purchase a track system to hang it on that was at least six feet wide to ensure the door could open wide enough to not block the doorway while open. My wife and I started searching for track systems we liked the look of and that were wide enough and finally settled on and purchased one for $116.00 from Amazon. I also started to search for barn board for sale to construct the door out of. My wife and I decided that was the material we wanted to use in order to obtain the rustic look we both like. This however, is were I had difficulty this week as there was only one place in the area I could find barn board for a decent p...

Welcome to my first Genius hour blog. The question I have settled on is how do you hang a sliding door? I struggled with picking my question as I did not know how to approach such an open ended assignment. I initially was interested in examining how modern professional soccer has changed the way the largest teams are run and the lack of home grown players they have. However, I decided that question was to easy to research and had to much empirical evidence that would make it to straight forward to answer. So instead I chose to focus on something I have never done before but have had a interest in learning for a while. My goal is to have a sliding door hung for my bedroom door by October 19th 2017. I will measure how successful I am by how the door looks and how well it works. My first step will be to measure my doorway and start shopping for materials to build the door and a track to hang it on.

My TED Talk

I found the TED talk quite stressful to film as I had never filmed myself before. However, once I wrote out what I wanted to say and started filming I actually enjoyed myself. I think it was a great experience and I can use what I learned from it later in life.

I think I acquired  many skills I will be able to use again through this project.

My Movie Trailer

I really enjoyed using Powtoon to make my trailer. I liked playing around with the different animations and music you could use. I think that I will be able to use the skills i acquired through making this in my career many times to make interactive slide shows or cartoons for my class.
